Charles A. (Charlie) Penniman, age 88 of Conneaut, passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at The Villa at the Lake.
Charles was born May 19, 1935, in Conneaut, the son of Worthy and Catherine (Specht) Penniman. He was a 1953 graduate of Rowe High School. He married the love of his life, Loretta (Notte) Penniman, on August 3, 1957, at St. Francis Cabrini Church in Conneaut. He and Loretta were able to share sixty-one beautiful years together.
He worked as a maintenance man at Union Carbide, until he retired. During his retirement, Charles worked at Rich’s Amoco Station, in Conneaut, pumping gas and greeting people with his infectious smile and personality. In his later years, he also was employed by Publix, while wintering in Florida.
Charles served in the United States Army, and was stationed at Fort Richardson, Alaska, where he was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, and a Marksman Badge (Rifle). He also served as Head Waiter for the Officer’s Club and was a member of the Ski Patrol. Charles also served in the USAR at Fort Sheridan, Illinois.
Charles was a member of the Conneaut Fish and Game Club, Downtown Coaches Club, and Camp Bennett, in Potter County Pa. He also was a past president of the Conneaut Zoning Board of Appeals.
He and Loretta loved wintering in St. Cloud, Florida, traveling on cruises to the Caribbean, going to casinos, and taking rides to enjoy the Conneaut harbor and Lakefront.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Loretta.
Charles is survived by his daughter Lori (Christopher) Baruffa of Madison, son Charles (Debbie) Penniman, of Fruitland Park Florida, brother Larry (Sue) Penniman of Conneaut, sisters Mary (Doug) Oldaker of Kingsville, and Denise (Kevin) Fitzmartin of Ashtabula, son-in-law John Jyurovat of Saybrook, granddaughters Jeannie (David Jackson) Jyurovat and Tanya (Will) Hoylman, and great-grandchildren Bryce, Colton, Jacob, Torynn, and Leila.
A memorial service will be held for Charles and Loretta at the convenience of the family.
Charles’ family would like to thank the staff of The Villa at the Lake, Dr. Houston and Nurse Practitioner Lori Reed, the ER staff and 3rd floor staff of UH Conneaut, Hospice of the Western Reserve, and others who assisted with the care provided for our father.
