Carl Zappitelli Obituary

Carl V. Zappitelli, age 90, passed away on September 22, 2024 at the Ashtabula Regional Health Center, surrounded by his family. 

Carl was born on February 14, 1934, in Conneaut, Ohio, the son of Emil and Dorothy (Mucciarone) Zappitelli.  He graduated from Conneaut High School in 1952.  He is a member of Corpus Christi Parish.

He worked as a machinist apprentice at the Nickel Plate Railroad after high school.  He married Elizabeth “Betty” Dittler in 1956 at St. Frances Cabrini Church.  His military service was with the National Guard from 1956 to 1962, two years of which were active duty.  He was employed at Fenestra in Erie, PA, then RMI Extrusion in Ashtabula, where he worked as a production foreman until his retirement in 1994 after 32 years.

Carl was well known for his prowess as a pitcher playing fast-pitch softball.  He also enjoyed bowling and golf and belonged to many leagues.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, his dear brothers Michael “Midge” and Anthony. 

He is survived by his wife Betty Zappitelli, his children Mary Zappitelli of Conneaut, Rachel (Steve) Heller of Portland OR, Caroline (Mark) Hido of Conneaut, Ken (Maria) Zappitelli of Conneaut, Carl (Linda) Zappitelli of Geneva, OH and Joseph Zappitelli of Northridge, CA.  He is also survived by his sister Nancy (Pat) Cifelli of Conneaut.

His surviving grandchildren are Heather (Jeff) Lawlor of Madison, OH, Kevin Bernini of Stuart, FL, Sara Heller of Portland, OR, Madelyn Zappitelli of Northridge, CA, Joely Zappitelli of Chesterland, OH, Devyn Zappitelli of Conneaut, Julian Zappitelli and Carlina Zappitelli of Madison, OH, step grandchildren are Matt Heller of Portland, OR, and Taylor, Madison and Nicholas Tomcany, and one great grandchild Katelynn Lawlor of Madison, OH, he is also survived by many dear nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 27, 2024 at the Raisian Funeral Home, 581 Harbor Street, Conneaut.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at St. Frances Cabrini Church, 744 Mill Street, Conneaut with Father Philip Miller of Corpus Christi Parish officiating.  Following Mass a luncheon will be held at Corpus Christi Parish Hall. 

Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
