Daniel Szalai Obituary

Daniel Robert Szalai, age 83 of Conneaut, died January 13, 2023, at UH Geauga Hospital.

Dan was born on December 27, 1939, in Butler, PA, the son of Martin and Elizabeth (Nyakas) Szalai. He enlisted in the United States Army and served his country until he was honorably discharged. Dan worked for many years at the former Rockwell Brake Plant Division as shift foreman, Timken Axle and later retired from General Aluminum as a toolmaker and foreman.

Dan enjoyed bowling, golfing, hunting, baseball, and slow pitch. He bowled many tournaments with his brothers and enjoyed the ABC Bowling Tournament. He was also a former member of the American Legion Cowle Post 151 and the Conneaut Moose Lodge.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Patricia Doer, brothers Marty Szalai, John Szalai, Michael Szalai and Steve Szalai, and three step-sisters, Peggy, Sophie and Charlotte.

Dan is survived by the love of his life, wife Mary (Poplstein) Szalai, whom he married in 1971, a son David Szalai, daughters Jodi Forbes, Jill Forbes, Rebecca Odone, Leslie Dalrymple, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, and sisters Elizabeth Passmore and Cheryl Sharp.

At Dan’s request there were no funeral services held and he will be buried at Glenwood Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions for Dan can be made to the Raisian Funeral Home, 581 Harbor St, to assist the family with funeral expenses.


Dan's wife would like to thank Dan's family and friends during his illness and death for all the help and condolences.
