George N. Hlifka age 88 of Conneaut passed away on February 27, 2024 in Ashtabula County Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
George was born on October 4, 1935 in Erie, PA; the son of George R. and Anna Polk Hlifka. He was a 1953 graduate of Rice Avenue Union High School in Girard, PA and entered in the United States Marine Corp following high school. He proudly served his country for three years in the Korean Conflict as a Sergeant until he was honorably discharged in 1956, but lived his life as “once a Marine always a Marine”.
George worked at Bucyrus-Erie, Mallory Metals, and RMI Metals for 47 years as a Maintenance Supervisor/Engineer until his retirement. Post retirement, he continued to work as a consultant for RMI Metals.
George was a member of Corpus Christi Parish, lifetime member of the VFW in West Springfield, American Legion Girard Tri Boro #0494, Conneaut Moose Club, and was the first President of Amboy Archery Club in 1962. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing. He was well known for being a handyman. He was always ready to help anyone, at any time, do anything. He built 3 homes with his wife for his family that he was very proud of. He loved to play bingo and going to casinos. For many years, he was in the Conneaut Boosters and loved helping at football games. He especially loved the time he spent with his family, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
George was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy C. Hlifka in 2016, daughter Mary Hlifka Seipel in 2015, brother Frank Hlifka and sister Delores Weiss.
George is survived by his sons George (Cathy) Hlifka of Leroy Township, OH, James (Lea) Hlifka of Chardon, OH, John (Veronica) Hlifka of Fort Mill, SC, son-in-law Kelly Seipel of Dublin, OH, daughters Dolly (Mike) Sherman of Conneaut, and Cathy (Bryan) Schwartz of Sunbury, OH, and 15 grandchildren: Tom Spencer Jr. (Courtney), Jeff Spencer (Kelsey), Sheila Sherman, Jessie Schwartz, Garrett Schwartz, Brady Schwartz, Bethany Fitzgerald, JP Hlifka, Sydney Johnson (Nate), Jorja Hlifka, Jacob Hlifka, Joseph Seipel, Nick Seipel, Robert Seipel and Jonathan Hlifka and 9 great grandchildren: George and Emma-Grace Spencer, Colden and Carson Spencer, Charlotte, Maddox, Wyatt, and Liliana Butler, and Evalyn Johnson. Sister-in-law Pat Hlifka of Laguna Beach, CA, sister Patricia Hope of Fullerton, CA, and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 12-2pm on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at the Raisian Funeral Home, 581 Harbor Street, Conneaut.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be held immediately following visitation on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at St. Frances Cabrini Church, 744 Mill Street, Conneaut, with Father Miller officiating.
Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Route 20, Conneaut with the American Legion Honor Squad conducting military honors.
Memorial contributions may be made to Corpus Christi Parish and Hospice of Western Reserve.
