Robert D. Best

Robert D. Best, age 89, of North Kingsville, passed away June 3, 2025, at Ashtabula County Medical Center.

Robert was born on October 30, 1935, in Conneaut, the son of Elmer and Angeline Gildone Best. He was a 1954 graduate of Rowe High School and went on to work at the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad for many years working as a car knocker, switcher and yardmaster and later retired as the Transportation Supervisor.

Robert served his country in the United States Army and the National Guard. He was an avid outdoorsman and an excellent marksman and was also a member of the Amboy Rifle Club. Robert loved to hunt and fish.  He was a Big Brother/Big Sister and received an award for Big Brother of the Year. He was a member of Corpus Christi Parish and the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Donna Askew Best, whom he married January 15, 1954, brothers Wilbert, Larry, James, Charles and Harold Best, sisters Marcella Kennedy, Ruth D’Ambra and Mary Best, a daughter in law Regina Best and infant brothers Paul and Richard Best.

Robert is survived by two sons, Robert J. Best and Gene (Debby) Best, a daughter Denise (David) Eagley, grandchildren Robert Tredway, Mark, Stephanie and Sean Best, step-grandchildren, Chris, Nicholas, Eugene, and Desiree Cottom and many great-grandchildren as he loved them all, sister Carol Sharp and cousin Sr. Lois Best SND.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, from 10:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. followed by funeral services at 12:00 p.m. with Fr. Philip Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, where the American Legion Honor Squad will conduct military honors.
