Dennis B. Byrd, age 67 of Conneaut, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Wednesday June 18, 2014 after injuries he suffered from a motorcycle accident while on the way to a family reunion in Pocahontas, Virginia.
Dennis was born on July 16, 1946 in Pocahontas, Virginia, the son of Robert C. and Edna R. Dalton Byrd. He was a 1964 graduate of Northwestern High School, where he was a four year letter-man and All-County in baseball and football. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force in December of 1964 and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War until he was honorably discharged in April of 1968. Dennis also served in the Air Force Reserves 1970.
He returned to Conneaut and worked at the Pittsburgh and Conneaut Dock Company in structural maintenance, a certified welder and heavy equipment operator for 33 years until his retirement. Dennis loved to ride his “V” Star motorcycle and play billiards. He played softball for Al’s Motors and in the over 40 softball league, he liked to bowl and play golf in the Harbor Hackers league and throw horseshoes. He was a former member of the VFW and the Conneaut Moose Club.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, and is survived by his wife, Mary A. Birckbichler Byrd of Conneaut, three sons, Dennis “Aaron” and Patty Byrd of Charlotte, NC, Nick Byrd of Conneaut, Doug and Katie Byrd of Biloxi, Mississippi, four grandchildren Allison, Kirstyn, Talia and Kenna, four brothers, Robert “Curt” and Jane Byrd of Albion, PA, Gerry W. and Deb Byrd of Springboro, PA, Michael and Darlene Byrd of Bear Creek, PA, Jeff and fiance, Leslie Byrd of Kingsville, OH and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, June 23, 2014 at the Conneaut Church of God, 5327 Center Rd (Route 7), Conneaut with Pastor Carson Robson officiating. The American Legion Honor Squad will conclude at the church with full military services for Dennis, as he was so proud to serve his country during the Vietnam War.
Arrangements are being handled by the Raisian Family Funeral Home, 581 Harbor Street, Ohio.
