Edward E. Zappitelli, age 88 of Conneaut, died early Monday morning, January, 19, 2015 at the Villa at the Lake.
Ed was born on March 15, 1926 in Conneaut, Ohio the son of Eugene and and Olylmpia DiPlacido. He was a 1944 graduate of Conneaut High School and attended the Ohio State University. In 1944 Ed enlisted in the United States Army and served his country until he was honorably discharged in June of 1946. Ed returned to Conneaut to work at the Nickel Plate Railroad. He later worked for many years as a car knocker at the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad, until he retired. He also worked in construction as a second job for several years.
Ed was a member of Corpus Christi Parish and an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus Council #627. Ed sang in the St. Frances Cabrini Men's Choir and St. Mary Choir. He volunteered many hours to help his church and parish. Ed enjoyed playing cards, especially pinochle. Ed loved spending time in his garden growing roses and tomatoes. Ed was also an avid woodworker and loved to dance and sing. He especially loved the time he spent with his grandchildren, who called him "Boppa".
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Betty Munson Zappitelli, whom he married on August 14, 1948, a sister, Josephine Zappitelli, and two brothers, Anthony and Henry "Butch" Zappitelli.
Ed is survived by two sons, Francis E. and Laura Zappitelli of Lake Geneva, WI, Robert "Bob" Zappitelli of Conneaut, three daughters, Mary L. and Robert Lardi of Conneaut, Carol and Jim Laine of Chandler, AZ, and Jill and Jeff Nick of Painesville, OH, brothers, Eugene and Joan Zappitelli of Scott Depot, WV, and Father Frank Zappitelli of Fountain Hills, AZ, a sister, Theresa Ozolek of Fountain Hills, AZ, grandchildren, Nicholas, Loren, Kara, Julie, Meg, Mackenzie, Ashley, Chelsie, Christopher, Joshua, Jesse, Marybeth, Sean and Brian, great-grandchildren, Alexie, Bailee, Brooke, Gavin, Grace, Shay, Peyton, Preston, Nathan, Madilyn, Anya, Evey, Trent, Ava, Jillian, Justin, Stephani and Dani.
Calling hours will be held on from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at the Raisian Family Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 581 Harbor Street, Conneaut.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at St. Frances Cabrini Church, 744 Mill Street, Conneaut, with Father Raymond Thomas and Father Philip Miller concelebrating.
Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Route 20, Conneaut, with the American Legion Honor Squad conducting Military Honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations for Edward be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve or to the Alzheimer's Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
