Henry "Butch" Zappitelli, age 90 of Conneaut, died Friday, May 16, 2014 at his home.
Butch was born on March 7, 1924 in Conneaut the son of Eugene and Olympia (DiPlacido) Zappitelli. Butch graduated from Conneaut High School in 1943 and enlisted in the United States Army June 17, 1943. He was a "Omaha Beach-D-Day Veteran" who served his country until he was honorably discharged on December 24, 1945. He returned to Conneaut and went to work as a boilermaker at the Nickel Plate Railroad until 1958. He then worked for the State of Ohio for ODOT as a construction supervisor for 30 years until his retirement in 1987. After retirement, Butch worked part time as a consultant for Mosure & Syrakis Construction in Youngstown.
Butch was a member of Corpus Christi Parish and attended St. Frances Cabrini Church. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus 627 and American Legion Cowle Post 151. In Butch's younger days he enjoyed playing softball on the Nickel Plate softball team and bowled in several bowling leagues. He also loved to garden in his backyard, and traveling with his wife to spend winters in Florida and Arizona. He especially enjoyed eating and cooking Italian food and putting on dinners for various charity functions and church. Butch loved his family and grandchildren and spending time with them.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Roselyn Marie (Smith) Zappitelli, whom he married August 14, 1947, his parents; brother, Anthony Zappitelli, a sister, Josephine Zappitelli, a brother -in-law Walter Ozolek and sister-in-law, Betty Zappitelli.
Butch is survived by his son, Eugene Zappitelli of Conneaut, daughter Alice Marie and Sam Ansbro of Conneaut, brothers, Edward Zappitelli of Conneaut, Eugene and Joan Zappitelli of Scott Depot, West Virginia, Father Francis Zappitelli of Fountain Hills, Arizona, a sister Theresa Ozolek also of Fountain Hills, Arizona, a sister -in-law Margaret Zappitelli of Conneaut and his loving grandchildren, Ryan Ansbro and Megan Ansbro, along with several nieces, nephews and many cousins.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at St. Frances Cabrini Church, 744 Mill Street, Conneaut, with Fr. Philip Miller and Fr. Frank Zappitelli concelebrating Mass.
Entombment will follow at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, Route 20, North Kingsville, Ohio, where the American Legion Honor Squad will conduct full military honors.
Memorial contributions may be made to Corpus Christi Parish, or the Hospice of the Western Reserve. Envelopes will be available at the church or the Raisian Family Funeral Home, 581 Harbor St, where arrangements are being handled.
