Howard F. "Howie" Copeland age 87 of Conneaut, died on his birthday, Friday, August 29, 2014 at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.
Howie was born August 29, 1927 in Albion, Pa, the son of Frank and LuLu ( Hale) Copeland. Following graduation in 1944 from Harbor High School, Howie enlisted in the United States Navy where he served aboard the U.S.S. Caloosahatchee as a Seaman 1st Classman until he was honorably discharged. He returned to the Conneaut area and worked at the Nickle Plate Railroad for a short time and then Higley Construction Company where he learned to become a skilled Mason. Howie retired in 1989 from the Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock Company where he worked for many years in the maintenance and carpentry shop.
Howie was a member of Corpus Christi Parish and attended St. Frances Cabrini Church. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus 627, Conneaut Moose Lodge and the American Legion Cowle Post 151 of which he was very proud of and honored to be.
Howie was well known for his masonry skills. He was always helping others pour concrete sidewalks, driveways and in ground pools. He also was a great cook. He loved to make his famous homemade sausage and peppers, homemade wine and fantastic meatballs. He most cherished the time he could spend with his daughter and grandchildren.
Howie is survived by his wife, Marguerite M.( Palmer) Copeland whom he married June 14, 1947, his daughter Renee and Kenneth Rood, of Michigan City, Michigan, two grandchildren Patrick and Anke Rood of Blackwood, New Jersey, Abbey Rood of Jackson, Michigan and a sister Doris and William Luoma of Ashtabula.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and one sister.
Calling hours will be held Monday, September 1, 2014 from 3-6 pm at the Raisian Family Funeral Home, 581 Harbor St, Conneaut, Ohio.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at 11:00 am at St. Frances Cabrini Church, 744 Mill Street, Conneaut with Fr. Robert Lanterman officiating.
Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Conneaut with the American Legion Honor Squad conducting Military Honors
